Gala Celebrates Grassroots Youth Crime Prevention Projects

Edmonton youth from diverse communities are gathering to share their unique crime prevention projects. Youth groups, the community and organizations will celebrate crime prevention project successes on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in the City Room at City Hall. The top project, selected by a panel of judges, earns a $2500 cash prize sponsored by SOS Children's Safety Magazine. "Our young people hold the future of this city in their hands, so building safer communities in Edmonton starts with engaging youth and addressing the issues that might lead them to become involved in crime," said Jan Fox, Executive Director of REACH Edmonton. Seven youth groups gathered at the Combat Crime Youth Think Tank in May, 2013 to learn about crime prevention from international experts, local leaders and peers. They then had several months to plan and implement their own crime prevention project in their community with a $1000 grant. The Combat Crime Gala Celebration will provide youth with an opportunity to report back to their peers about their project, and give insight into community safety issues affecting youth in Edmonton. Project partners include: City of Edmonton, Edmonton Police Service, REACH Edmonton, SOS Children's Safety Magazine, United Way and YOUCAN.
