Mayor, community leaders meet to discuss complex social issues

EDMONTON - Community safety, poverty, Aboriginal wellness, homelessness - these are just some of the complex issues Edmonton is facing. How can we address them? REACH Edmonton and Mayor Don Iveson hope to explore solutions to these questions through a meeting facilitated by internationally renowned speaker and facilitator Adam Kahane. Mayor Iveson and Kahane will meet with community, business and Aboriginal leaders Thursday, June 5 at the Sutton Place Hotel (10235 - 101 Street) from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Kahane was a key facilitator in the Mont Fleur scenarios held in South Africa during the transition from apartheid, when a diverse group of 25 South Africans worked together to effect the transition to democracy. Since then, he has led many such processes in more than 50 countries around the world. He will share his deep experience in bringing diverse groups together and exploring innovative solutions. "Solving complex issues like these require real community-wide collaboration and Adam Kahane has the expertise to help us with this kind of dialogue in Edmonton. By bringing in a speaker like this, REACH is giving back to the community in hopes that all people working with vulnerable Edmontonians can benefit," said Jan Fox, executive director of REACH Edmonton. "REACH is a backbone organization that works collaboratively with partners to affect social change, so Adam is a great fit for this event." • A media availability will be held following this closed-door meeting, at 2 p.m. in the lobby. • Kahane is the keynote speaker at REACH Edmonton's AGM and Showcase Celebration that evening, at Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre (11113 - 113 Street) at 6 p.m. This event is open to the public. • Kahane will also participate in a webcast discussion June 6 at 10 a.m. titled "How to move forward together on our toughest social challenges."
