REACH AGM Showcase and Celebration brings renowned Scottish speaker to Edmonton

REACH Edmonton's third Annual General Meeting and Showcase Celebration is fast approaching, with REACH successes in 2012 set to be on display May 29. This year's event will feature keynote speaker Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, who was instrumental in the founding of the Violence Reduction Unit in Strathclyde Scotland. Carnochan is internationally renowned for his work in violence reduction and gang reduction strategies. Carnochan will bring his expertise after four decades in the field as a police officer and will share his experiences and successes in addressing gang activity as well as family and community violence. In his keynote address, Carnochan will address violence reduction as a public health issue. He is adamant that police cannot make a positive impact alone and that communities must work together to address crime reduction. "Violence makes you ill and it's a problem for society. It is a contagious disease," said Carnochan. "There is no silver bullet but we can become better as a society. It's complicated but not complex. Violence in the home must be tackled or we will never fix violence in society." One of the biggest challenges facing crime prevention and harm reduction today is old ideas, said Carnochan. "We need to do things differently and focus on shared outcomes: safer and healthier communities," he said. Carnochan is a regular lecturer at the Scottish Police College and presenter on the work of the Violence Reduction Unit at conferences, seminars and universities throughout the UK and internationally. He will also be speaking at a number of events in Edmonton leading up to the REACH AGM and Showcase Celebration. The 2013 AGM will feature additional networking time prior to the AGM and Showcase Celebration. "We're really excited to showcase our successes in 2012 and share our vision to make Edmonton a safer city in the years to come," said REACH Edmonton Executive Director Jan Fox. The event will be held at the Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre (11113 - 113 St.) from 5 to 9 p.m. featuring networking time at 5 p.m., the AGM at 6 p.m. and the REACH Edmonton Showcase Celebration and keynote speaker at 7 p.m. Members and non-members are welcome to attend.
