Funke Smith is a visionary changemaker, social innovator, and community builder committed to unlocking human potential and advancing equity through transformative education and economic empowerment. As the Founder and CEO of Skillcity Institute, she leads future-focused initiatives that equip youth—particularly those from under-resourced communities—with 21st-century skills, career readiness, and access to opportunities in STEM fields and emerging
industries.
One of the first 20 individuals in Canada to earn the National Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP) designation, Funke brings a dynamic blend of global experience and grassroots community impact. Her early career in international development includes consulting for United Nations Specialized Agencies across sectors, before transitioning her expertise into community-driven innovation in Alberta.
Funke holds an interdisciplinary degree from the Universidad de la Habana in Cuba and a Master’s in Multilingual Communications—
with specializations in IT, Business, and Human Services—from London Metropolitan University in the UK. Her leadership has been recognized with numerous awards, including two consecutive Woman of the Year Awards for her outstanding work in youth skilling and economic empowerment.
Widely known for her ability to identify and nurture untapped potential, Funke is driven by a compelling mission: to create inclusive pathways to success and help individuals thrive. She brings to the REACH Edmonton Board a bold vision, a collaborative spirit, and an unwavering commitment to safe, strong, and thriving communities.
